This is because it will stretch as you wash and wear it, so you'll need to fasten tighter when this happens. If you naturally gravitate towards the tightest hook on a brand new bra, chances are it's too big for you. Look in the mirror and check that the band is at the same level all around your body. They recommend going down a band size and up a cup size if your back strap is riding up; for example, go from a 36B to a 34D.

The best way to figure out what fits and suits you is to set an afternoon aside and spend some time with your local fitter.
